Your dissertation is probably the longest piece of academic writing you’ll ever produce. If you’re studying at a UAE university — whether that’s undergraduate or master’s level — you’re looking at anywhere from 8,000 to 20,000 words depending on your programme.
That’s a lot of words. And the thing that separates a good dissertation from a bad one isn’t fancy vocabulary or obscure sources. It’s structure. A well-structured dissertation guides your reader through your argument like a clear road. A poorly structured one feels like being driven around in circles by someone who’s lost.
The Standard Structure
Most UK-affiliated universities in the UAE follow this structure. Your programme might have minor variations, but the skeleton is almost always the same:
Chapter 1: Introduction (10–15% of word count)
This is where you set the scene. What’s your topic? Why does it matter? What’s your research question? The introduction should move from broad to specific.
What goes wrong: students either write a two-paragraph introduction that says nothing, or they dump their entire literature review here because they’re nervous about filling space.
Chapter 2: Literature Review (25–30%)
This chapter demonstrates you’ve read and understood existing research. But — and I cannot stress this enough — it is NOT a summary of everything you’ve read.
A good literature review is thematic, not source-by-source. Group your sources around key themes. Compare and contrast. Identify gaps — that’s where your own research fits in.
Chapter 3: Methodology (15–20%)
This explains HOW you’re going to answer your research question. You need to cover:
- Research philosophy (positivist, interpretivist, pragmatist)
- Research approach (deductive, inductive, or abductive)
- Data collection methods (surveys, interviews, case studies)
- Sampling strategy and size
- Ethical considerations
- Limitations of your methodology
What goes wrong: students treat this as copy-paste from their textbook. Your methodology needs to be justified in relation to YOUR research question.
Chapter 4: Findings / Results (15–20%)
Present what you found, without interpretation. Keep it clean and organised. Don’t mix findings with discussion — Chapter 4 is “here’s what I found,” Chapter 5 is “here’s what it means.”
Chapter 5: Discussion (15–20%)
This is where you earn your grade. Connect your findings back to the literature review. Don’t just say “my findings agree with Smith (2020).” Say why they agree, what conditions might affect that, and what it means for practice.
Chapter 6: Conclusion and Recommendations (5–10%)
Summarise key findings. Answer your research question directly. Make recommendations. Do not introduce new information here.
UAE-Specific Considerations
- Data collection in the UAE can be challenging — some organisations are reluctant to participate in research.
- Ethical approval may require sensitivity around certain topics.
- The UAE’s rapid development means some research becomes outdated quickly. Keep sources current.
- Convenience sampling is common due to access constraints — acknowledge it openly.
The Timeline You Should Actually Follow
| Phase | Tasks | Realistic Timeframe |
|---|---|---|
| Planning | Topic selection, proposal, supervisor meetings | Weeks 1–4 |
| Literature Review | Reading, note-taking, writing Chapter 2 | Weeks 3–8 |
| Methodology | Design, ethics approval, pilot testing | Weeks 6–10 |
| Data Collection | Surveys, interviews, secondary research | Weeks 9–14 |
| Analysis & Writing | Chapters 4, 5, and 6 | Weeks 13–18 |
| Revision | Editing, proofreading, formatting | Weeks 17–20 |
Notice the overlaps? That’s deliberate. A dissertation isn’t a linear process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pick something you’re genuinely interested in AND can access data for. If you work in banking, a study about banking in the UAE makes sense because you can access respondents.
Every two to three weeks minimum. Short, regular check-ins save you from major rewrites.
This is common in the UAE. Consider switching to qualitative methods, using secondary data, or adjusting your sampling approach. Talk to your supervisor early.
Most UAE universities have policies. Generally: AI tools can help brainstorm and check grammar. They cannot write your dissertation. AI detection tools are improving fast.
Your dissertation doesn’t have to be perfect. It has to be well-structured, properly researched, and clearly argued. If you’re stuck at any stage, reach out to ScribeGulf before you’re desperate, not after.
